Williams, universally known as 'Carbine', has been compared with the likes of
Colt and Browning in the field of weaponry, where he holds 52 patents. In 1921,
the 20-year- old Williams operated a liquor still in the lowlands near
Fayetteville, North Carolina, and was convicted of second- degree murder. In
prison he worked on three revolutionary weapons which led to his being granted a
