In 1912 Dr. Prynce Hopkins built 'Boyland', a private school for underprivileg ed boys, on a 13-acre campus near Santa Barbara, CA. The terrain proved too stony for athletic fields, so in 1916 Dr. Hopkins removed his school to a Persian-style campus now known as the Samarkand ( Hotel) life care center.
