Castle became the business agent for the missionary contingent and Cooke became head of the Royal School whose pupils included five future Hawaiian monarchs. Castle & Cooke started as a humble business partnership in 1851 with a general store and later expanded to sugar, shipping and pineapple and eventually to bananas, seafood and other lines to become a worlwide leader in the food industry.
